Using Larry Lingo in School
What Larry Lingo is
Larry Lingo™ is a visual communication and learning system. It uses consistent symbols to support understanding, expression, routines, and transitions.
What it is NOT
It is not a replacement for speech, signing, AAC devices, or professional communication plans. It complements existing communication.
Use symbols consistently
The same symbol for HELP means HELP everywhere — on the Core Board, on the Safety Board, in Now & Next, and in print. Consistency is the system.
Now & Next
Choose a symbol for NOW and a symbol for NEXT. This helps a child understand what's happening and what comes next. Keep it simple — two or three symbols.
Visual Timetables
Build the day's sequence using approved symbols. The child can see what's coming. When something is finished, mark it — don't delete it.
Communication Boards
Use the themed boards (School, Feelings, Safety, etc.) for context-specific communication. The Safety Strip is always available.
Model symbols
Point to symbols while you talk. Example: point to [FIRST] [SCHOOL] [THEN] [HOME] while saying 'First school, then home.' Don't demand a response — just model.
Print resources
Print symbols, boards, and timetables. Printed and digital symbols use the SAME master artwork. Keep positions consistent.
Personalise without altering masters
You can create custom boards and arrangements. You cannot change the official symbol artwork, meaning, or concept ID.
