Connection Before Correction: The Larry Way
Before you correct behaviour, connect with the child. It changes everything about how they receive your guidance.
When your child is acting out, your instinct is to correct — to stop the behaviour, to teach the lesson. But here's the thing: a child who feels disconnected can't hear your correction. Their brain is in fight-or-flight. The lesson bounces off.
Connection before correction means pausing first. Getting down to their level. Saying 'I can see you're really upset' before 'We don't hit.' It doesn't mean the behaviour is okay — it means you're addressing the feeling before the behaviour, because the feeling is what's driving it.
This isn't permissive parenting. It's actually more effective correction, because a child who feels understood is far more likely to listen, learn, and do better next time. Connection isn't the opposite of discipline — it's the foundation of it.
