Asking For Help Is Brave
Learning objective
To ask an adult or peer for help using a clear sentence, after making an attempt.
Success criteria
- I can say what I have already tried.
- I can name what I am stuck on.
- I can say who I would ask.
5 min · Starter — Stuck or not stuck?
Show four situations one at a time: a jammed coat zip, a maths question you cannot start, a friend who will not share, a word you cannot read. Children stand for “I could sort this myself” and sit for “I would need help”. Take no answers — just let them see the room disagreeing.
10 min · Teach — What asking for help sounds like
Model three sentence stems aloud, then have the class echo each one: “I have had a go and I am stuck on…”, “Can you show me the first bit?”, “I don't understand this yet.” Emphasise the word yet. Point out that all three sentences prove you tried first.
15 min · Practise — In threes
One child is stuck, one child helps, one child watches and reports back one thing the asker did well. Rotate so every child asks at least once. Circulate and scribe good phrasing onto the board using the child's name: “That was Amara's sentence.”
8 min · Apply — My help card
Each child writes or draws their own help card: who they would ask, and the exact words they would use. Cards live in trays or book bags and can be held up instead of spoken.
2 min · Plenary
“Show me on your fingers — how ready do you feel to ask for help tomorrow? One to five.” Note any child showing one or two and follow up individually.
SEND & adaptation notes
- Non-speaking children: use a HELP symbol card or AAC board \u2014 holding it up counts fully.
- Anxious children: let them rehearse with one trusted adult before the group task.
- Reduce the three sentence stems to one for children with working-memory difficulties.
- Avoid making eye contact a requirement of “asking properly”.
Assessment
Record which children asked for help unprompted during the following week, not during the lesson itself. Transfer, not performance, is the evidence.
