Navigating School Transitions with Confidence
Whether it's starting reception or moving to secondary, school transitions are big. Here's how to make them smoother.
School transitions — starting reception, moving to juniors, or the leap to secondary — are among the biggest milestones in a child's life. They bring excitement, but also uncertainty. And uncertainty is where anxiety lives.
The key is preparation without pressure. Talk about what will happen, walk the route, visit if you can. But don't oversell it — 'You'll love it!' can feel like a lot to live up to. Instead, try 'It might feel strange at first, and that's okay. You'll find your way.'
Most importantly, keep your own anxiety in check. Children are emotional detectives — they read your worry even when you don't say it. If you're calm and confident, they borrow some of that. If you're visibly anxious, they absorb it. Your steadiness is their anchor.
