Sibling Rivalry: Turning Conflict into Connection
Sibling fights can feel relentless. Here's how to help them navigate conflict — and maybe even become friends.
If you have more than one child, you have sibling rivalry. It's as inevitable as it is exhausting. The fights over toys, the 'he started it,' the constant refereeing. But here's a reframe: sibling conflict is actually a training ground for relationships.
Where else do children get to practise negotiation, compromise, and repair in such a safe space? Siblings are each other's first teachers in how to coexist with another human. The skills they develop through bickering and making up are the same skills they'll use in every future relationship.
Your job isn't to eliminate conflict — it's to guide them through it. Resist taking sides. Instead, be the mediator: 'I can see you're both upset. Let's figure this out together.' Help them name their feelings and hear each other. Over time, they'll start doing this themselves. And one day — maybe not soon, but one day — they might even become friends.
