My Superhero Strengths

Children identify their unique strengths and create a superhero persona that celebrates what makes them special.

45 min KS1 RSE lesson plan

A confidence-building lesson where children identify personal strengths, practise positive self-talk and celebrate what makes them unique through a superhero persona.

Section 1: Lesson Introduction

Gather the children in a circle and ask: 'If you could have any superpower, what would it be?' Allow a few children to share. Then explain that today they will discover something even more powerful — their own real-life strengths. Show Larry's picture and share his message: 'You already have superpowers inside you — let's find them together.'

Section 2: Warm-Up Activity — Strength Hunt

Give each child a sticky note and ask them to write or draw one thing they are good at (e.g. running, making people laugh, being kind, drawing). Collect the notes and read a few aloud without naming the child. Ask the class to guess whose strength it might be. Celebrate each strength with a cheer.

Section 3: Main Activity — Create Your Superhero

Children design their own superhero persona based on their personal strengths. Provide a template with spaces for: superhero name, special strength, costume colours, catchphrase and a short story about how their superhero helps others. Encourage children to think about real strengths — kindness, courage, creativity — rather than fantasy powers.

Section 4: Positive Self-Talk Practice

Teach children the 'I am' super-phrase. Model examples: 'I am kind', 'I am brave', 'I am creative'. Children write their own 'I am' statement on their superhero template and practise saying it aloud to a partner. Explain that superheroes use positive self-talk to feel confident before a challenge.

Section 5: Sharing Circle

Children take turns presenting their superhero to the class or a small group. The class responds with Larry's phrase: 'You can do it!' Celebrate uniqueness and remind children that everyone's strengths are different — and that is what makes a team of superheroes powerful.
