The Power of Yet
Introduce the word 'yet' as a tool for transforming 'I can't' into 'I can't yet.'
A growth mindset lesson introducing the word 'yet' as a powerful tool for transforming 'I can't' into 'I can't yet' and reframing challenges.
Section 1: Lesson Introduction
Write the word 'YET' on the board in large letters. Ask the children: 'What does this word mean?' Then ask: 'Who can ride a bike?' Some hands go up. Then ask: 'Who can't ride a bike... yet?' Discuss how adding 'yet' changes everything. Share Larry's message: 'You can't do it yet — but you will. The 'yet' is where the magic happens.'
Section 2: The Yet Story
Tell or read a story about a character (or Larry) who couldn't do something, felt frustrated, practised, and eventually could do it. Emphasise the journey from 'I can't' to 'I can't yet' to 'I can!' Ask children to identify the turning point — when did the character change their thinking?
Section 3: Main Activity — Yet Transformations
Give children sentence cards with 'I can't...' statements (e.g. 'I can't spell that word', 'I can't do maths', 'I can't run fast'). Children transform each into 'I can't... yet!' and then add what they need to do to get there ('I can't spell that word yet, but I will practise every day'). Children create their own 'Yet' cards for something they're working on.
Section 4: Reframing Challenges
Present common challenge scenarios (getting stuck on a question, losing a game, making a mistake in front of the class). In pairs, children practise reframing each scenario using 'yet' and growth mindset language. Share examples with the class.
Section 5: Yet Wall
Create a 'Yet Wall' display where children post their 'I can't... yet' cards. These will be revisited at the end of term to celebrate progress. Share Larry's encouragement: 'Every expert was once a beginner who said 'not yet.' Keep going!'
Lesson Introduction
Write 'YET' on the board. Ask who can ride a bike, then who can't ride a bike... yet. Discuss how 'yet' changes everything.
Main Activity
Children transform 'I can't' statements into 'I can't yet' cards with action plans, then practise reframing challenge scenarios in pairs.
Home Learning
Share the power of yet with your family. Ask: what is something you couldn't do as a child but can do now? Families can share their own 'yet' journeys.
