The Friendship Recipe
Children create a 'friendship recipe' identifying the ingredients that make a good friend.
A friendship lesson where children identify the qualities of a good friend, practise friendship skills and create a class friendship recipe together.
Section 1: Lesson Introduction
Show the children a mixing bowl and explain that today they are going to bake something very special — not a cake, but a friendship! Ask: 'What ingredients do you think go into a good friendship?' Collect their ideas on the board. Share Larry's message: 'A good friendship is made with kindness, a sprinkle of patience and a big scoop of fun.'
Section 2: Friendship Ingredients
Introduce the idea of 'friendship ingredients' — the qualities that make someone a good friend. Show picture cards of different qualities: kindness, sharing, listening, taking turns, forgiving, including others, being honest, making each other laugh. Discuss each one and ask children to give examples.
Section 3: Main Activity — Create Your Friendship Recipe
Children create their own 'Friendship Recipe' on a recipe card template. They choose their top 5 ingredients (qualities), write a method ('First, smile. Then, ask if they want to play. Next, take turns...') and give their recipe a name. Younger children can draw; older children can write full instructions. Encourage creativity.
Section 4: Friendship Skills Practice
Set up role-play stations where children practise friendship skills: 1) Asking to join a game, 2) Resolving a disagreement, 3) Comforting a sad friend, 4) Inviting someone who is alone. Children rotate through stations in pairs, practising each skill.
Section 5: Class Friendship Recipe
Combine everyone's best ideas into one 'Class Friendship Recipe' displayed on a large poster for the classroom wall. Each child contributes one ingredient. Share Larry's encouragement: 'You are all ingredients in each other's friendship recipe — together, you make something wonderful.'
Lesson Introduction
Show a mixing bowl. Explain: today we're baking a friendship! Ask what ingredients make a good friend.
Main Activity
Children create their own Friendship Recipe card choosing top 5 qualities and writing a method, then rotate through friendship skills role-play stations.
Home Learning
Share your friendship recipe with your family. Ask: what ingredients do grown-up friendships need? Families can share what they look for in a friend.
