The Kindness Ripple
Explore how one act of kindness creates ripples. Children plan and carry out their own kindness mission.
A kindness lesson using the ripple metaphor to help children understand how one small act can spread, with children planning and carrying out their own kindness mission.
Section 1: Lesson Introduction
Show the children a bowl of water and a pebble. Ask: 'What do you think will happen when I drop this pebble in?' Drop the pebble and watch the ripples spread. Explain that kindness works just like the ripples — one small act of kindness can spread to many people. Share Larry's message: 'When you are kind, you make the whole world a little brighter.'
Section 2: The Ripple Story
Read or tell a short story about a child who does something kind for someone, and that person then does something kind for someone else. Ask children to trace the ripple from person to person. Use visual cards or drawings to map the ripple on the board.
Section 3: Main Activity — Plan a Kindness Mission
In small groups, children plan a kindness mission they will carry out this week. Provide a 'Kindness Mission Plan' sheet with spaces for: who we will help, what we will do, when we will do it, and how we think it will make them feel. Encourage realistic, achievable acts — smiling at someone, helping a friend, tidying up without being asked.
Section 4: Kindness Ripple Simulation
Children stand in a circle. One child starts by doing a kind action (e.g. a high five, a compliment) to the person next to them. That person passes a kind action to the next, and so on around the circle. Afterward, discuss how it felt to receive and give kindness.
Section 5: Reflection and Commitment
Children write or draw their personal kindness pledge on a ripple-shaped card. These are displayed on a 'Kindness Pond' wall display. Share Larry's encouragement: 'One small act of kindness can change someone's whole day — and it starts with you.'
Lesson Introduction
Show a bowl of water and a pebble. Ask children to predict what happens when the pebble is dropped. Explain that kindness spreads like ripples.
Main Activity
In small groups, children plan a kindness mission for the week using a structured plan sheet, then simulate the ripple effect in a circle activity.
Home Learning
Challenge children to carry out one kindness act at home and ask their family to help them notice the ripple. Families can share stories of kindness they witnessed.
